What’s happening in bacon land?

I know we’ve been a little light on the blog postings lately, but don’t think we’ve abandoned it. As always, we’ve got lots of great recipes coming (be sure to send yours to recipes@baconsaltblog.com) and are even hiring a “celebrity chef” for some of the appearances we’ll be making in the near future (if you know someone that would be good for this, please pass it on).

What’s keeping us busy these days? Getting Bacon Salt into stores. They really stack the deck against little guys like us, so we’re implementing a few strategies to ensure that you won’t have to pay shipping fees forever.

  • First, we’re getting the seasoning into small stores that can move quickly – meat markets, barbecue stores, gourmet shops, independent grocers, etc. You might also see us pop up into some weird places, but we figure if someone wants to carry Bacon Salt and make it more convenient for our customers, why stop them? Even if they sell propane and propane accessories.
  • Second, we’re working on getting into larger retailers. It took some doing, but we now have 3 national distributors that can literally put Bacon Salt into just about any grocer in America. The really hard part is actually getting on the shelves – grocery stores often want lots of money (called “slotting fees”) just to put you on the shelves. They’re kind of outrageous, actually, but they can sometimes be waived for in-demand items, which leads us to…
  • How you can help: Ask your grocery manager to carry Bacon Salt – if enough people do this, it really can work.

Here’s a quick recipe to make up for last week’s absence: green beans, butter and Original Bacon Salt, something I make all the time and has been confirmed delicious by the good people at theĀ Geek Cooks LiveJournal community.
