This time of year is a time for giving thanks. We thank our customers, our suppliers, our people.
But we also want to thank those that are serving in foreign conflicts and their families. These soldiers are far away from home during an important family time, and are often putting themselves in harm's way to help keep people safe.
We got an email earlier this year from a soldier that really hit home with us. His job, along with about 10 other soldiers he works closely with in a specific area of Iraq, is to dismantle roadside bombs. In other words, he had what we would think was the most dangerous job in Iraq and was responsible for protecting unsuspecting civilians who might be driving through. He emailed us because he was having trouble getting an APO address to work, and loves and misses bacon. We decided to send him free Bacon Salt instead.
Even though we haven't posted an Operation Bacon Salt update lately, we've been quietly busy shipping out loads of Bacon Salt to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan throughout the last few months.
- November's recipients included a member of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, which is part of NATO, and a group of Marines stationed in an undisclosed location in the Middle East.
- Before that, we shipped Bacon Salt to a group of Army soldiers supporting force protection in Baghdad and Diwaniyah, Iraq and several soldiers that chose to remain anonymous (but supposedly had a mean desert barbecue in our honor).
- We also heard a great story about a mess hall in Iraq where they serve Bacon Salt in the food, put it on the tables and periodically yell out "Bacon Salt!"
We also recently learned that, due to popular demand, Bacon Salt will be stocked in all US military commissaries around the world in the coming months. We hope that the MRE's start tasting that much better as a result. Thank you to those who requested it!
We're really proud to support the troops this holiday season any way we can, and hope that you'll consider doing what you can through organizations like The USO and AnySoldier.com. In addition, all of the proceeds from merchandise sales on our website go to Mercy Corps, so if you're thinking about buying some baconey merchandise (or even if you're not) please consider helping a great organization like Mercy Corps with their efforts to alleviate poverty and suffering around the world.
Hope you all have a happy and safe Thanksgiving season!
