Bacon Salt Launches in Kroger, World Tour begins

It's been a busy few weeks here at Bacon Salt headquarters. We've been working overtime to try to make enough Bacon Salt to fulfill our first orders from Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain.

The good news is that we're now on the shelves in the spice section of thousands of Kroger stores in the US. The even better news is that we're kicking off a world tour to support our nationwide launch starting in Columbus and Cincinnati, OH. Justin and I - possibly in 7 foot tall bacon costumes - will be passing out samples of Bacon Salt at the Ohio State-Minnesota game in Columbus this Saturday and at the Bengals-Browns game in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Here's what we know so far: First, we'll be on the air in the morning on Monday on WSNY-FM Friday morning in Columbus at 6:45am (that's 4:45am our time, yikes). We're going to be at the Rockin' at the Riverwatch Tailgater in Columbus, which is also sponsored by CityBeat (who hooked us up there, big ups). And for the Bengals game, the location is TBD, but we'll be somewhere prominent and we promise it will be hard to miss us.

Body by Bacon Salt - Bacon Salt makes the Sunday funnies

Teresa at Frog Applause was kind enough to alert us to a brilliant comic strip she created that included Bacon Salt. Making the Sunday funnies is a new level of accomplishment for us. We're working on getting this puppy framed and in the front office right next to our mentions in World Wrestling Entertainment magazine and PC Gamer.

This also got us thinking - we're in the business of making everything taste like bacon. To date, we've limited ourselves to food products, specifically condiments. But could we make people taste like bacon too? Would dogs follow these bacon people around? We'd have to call the product something like Body by Bacon Salt.  The wheels are turning... stay tuned.

Bacon Salt Recipe: Bacon Salt Cheddar Cheese and Sour Cream Dip

The Bacon Salt test kitchens were in full R&D mode last week as we're doing a set of product demos with a sour cream maker in Wisconsin at a store called Roundy's. So, we scrambled to find something that goes well with sour cream and Bacon Salt.

After many, many spectacularly messy attempts, we came up with something absolutely awesome: a Bacon Salt Cheddar Cheese and Sour Cream dip. It's really, really good - I think we made the heartland proud.

Bacon Salt Cheddar Cheese and Sour Cream Dip

· 12 oz cream cheese (1.5 cups) – very important: NOT the whipped kind as it comes out too runny

· 1/2 cup sour cream

· 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

· 1/2 tsp black pepper

· 2 tablespoons chives

· 2 tablespoons Hickory Bacon Salt (plus a little more for dusting)

 

Mix all ingredients with hand blender in large mixing bowl. Serve in dip bowl with pretzels with sprigs of chives as a garnish. Refrigerate overnight and serve with an ice bowl underneath if possible to keep it cold (this is optional).

The Bacon Salt Shrine

We always love hearing about and seeing fun and creative uses for Bacon Salt (remember the Bacon Salt Air Freshener?). A Bacon Salt lover named Anthony sent us this email recently:

"Bacon Salt is fantastic. So fantastic that I’ve built a Shrine to Bacon Salt. I love it, my wife loves it, and my dog can’t tell the difference between Bacon Salt and real bacon!"

Bacon Salt Wins the Jesus Saves 200

In "you couldn't make this stuff up" news, our Bacon Salt simracer, ably driven by Castleton, NY's James Gutta, won a crucial race on the Coca-Cola Speedway this weekend - the Jesus Saves 200. Great job to James, you continue to make us proud.

Does Bacon Salt Really Work?

Something strange happens when...

Something strange happens when you make homemade croutons with Bacon Salt. We discovered this phenomenon this weekend when we had friends over for dinner for an end of summer salad. Because of the combination of the crunch from the croutons and the bacon taste from the Bacon Salt, you end up with a salad that tastes like it has real, crunchy bacon in it.

So here's a recipe that you can use to make your own baconey croutons, and we'll get to work on making some baconey croutons that we can sell on our website and in stores (any bread manufacturers out there?).

Homemade Baconey Croutons

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use leftover French bread, and cut into 1/2" cubes. In a saute pan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Mix the butter with Original Bacon Salt (approximately 1 - 1 1/2 tablespoons), add the bread cubes and toss to coat. Arrange croutons on a baking sheet and cook in the oven for about 15 minutes or until the croutons are crisp (tip: watch them closely so you don't burn them).

If you store in an airtight jar, the croutons should store for about 2 weeks.
