Bacon Salt on Chicago radio

One of our loyal Bacon Salt eaters named Matt emailed us an audio file today. It was a recording of him calling into one of my favorite radio shows growing up, the Steve Dahl show on WCKG in Chicago. It's a really funny clip actually.

He starts by telling Steve, "I've got something I know you're going to love" and directs him to the website. "It really tastes like bacon," he tells Steve. My favorite part is when Steve visited the website, read the "Everything should taste like bacon" tagline and said "What if I don't want everything to taste like bacon?" To which Matt replies, without missing a beat, "Why not? What's wrong with you?"

Revolution Health post on Bacon Salt/update on All Natural version

Hop over to the Revolution Health blog to read what their Center Manager for Weight Management Marc Zawel has to say about Bacon Salt. After several of the members at the weight loss clinic raved to them about the taste of Bacon Salt, they had this to say after receiving a sample:

It's called Bacon Salt. And it's pretty amazing. Invented by two guys in Seattle, Dave Lefkow and Justin Esch, they’ve created a product with a tagline, "Everything should taste like bacon." Available in three flavors -- Original, Peppered and Hickory -- the seasoning tastes strikingly like, well, bacon. Even better, it has zero calories, zero fat, zero carbs, is cool for vegetarians to enjoy and is even Kosher!

I've sprinkled it on burgers, eggs, even a lettuce and tomato sandwich and was almost surprised at how bacon-y it was.

He does also caution that there is sodium in our product (with a name like Bacon Salt, you've got to expect that) but points out that it has significantly less sodium than table salt (150mg vs. 590mg for table salt).

On a related healthy note, our All Natural version is coming along nicely. We know there are a lot of people with allergies and aversions to artificial flavors and MSG. We recently had a sampling of the All Natural version of Original, and we really liked it! So look for that coming soon.

Recipe: Bacon Salt Ham & Egg Sandwich

This recipe is inspired by Adrian (our former co-worker Alan's 7-yr old) who fancies himself #1 Bacon Salt fan (and is featured in our video).  According to Alan, this is his breakfast several times a week now.

Bacon Salt Ham & Egg Sandwich

Ingredients:

  1 slice ham

  1 slice cheddar cheese

  1 English muffin

  1 egg

  1/2 tbs. butter

  generous sprinkling of Bacon Salt

Directions:

  1. Place butter in skillet and melt on medium heat.  Crack egg into skillet and break yolk gently with fork or spatula.

  2. Fry egg 1-2 mins. and flip (over easy) and cook another 1-2 mins. until done.

  3. While egg is cooking, toast English muffin until lightly browned in toaster, toaster oven or broiler.

  4. Assemble sandwich: place slice of ham (fold or trim if large) on one muffin half, layer on the fried egg (fold or trim if too large) and top with the cheese slice.

  5. Place the assembled sandwich (open face) under a broiler or toaster oven to melt cheese.

  6. Remove from oven and generously sprinkle Bacon Salt over the sandwich.  Top with the other muffin half, slice in half and serve!

Two great Bacon Salt recipes and one very bad idea

Tami at Running with Tweezers (a popular food blog) is serving up some delicious sounding Bacon Salt recipes, including Penne Pasta with Arugula, Mascarpone, and Bacon Salt and Pan Fried Kale with Peppered Bacon Salt. Highly recommend checking them out as they sound delicious!

C0nsumer, however, is eating some items dredged in Bacon Salt that shouldn't be consumed by human beings. But you have to admire his dedication!

Vegan update

We've had quite a few people asking us about whether or not Bacon Salt is vegan. Hickory is vegan (the lactic acid is from the fermentation process for the soy sauce), but Peppered and Original are not (they contain dairy products in one of the flavors).

We're working on Original and Hickory to remove the dairy products, and will post an update here when and if we're successful. But in the meantime our vegan friends won't be slumming with Hickory, which happens to be my favorite flavor.

Mmmm... Peppered

I've always liked Peppered Bacon Salt. But last night, I became a HUGE fan of Peppered. Why? Because we had grilled oysters and whole Dungeness crabs with fresh garlic butter and Peppered Bacon Salt. And it was excellent, really excellent. The crab kind of reminded me of the mouth-watering salt and pepper crab you can get in the International District here in Seattle, but with a bacon-ny taste to it as well. I'm about to drool on my keyboard just thinking of how delicious it was.

Incidentally, we've had a few people ask us about Bacon Salt with popcorn. In our humble opinions, the best (and perhaps only) flavor that works well with popcorn is Peppered. It has just the right amount of sharpness to complement the popcorn.

A few more tips on popcorn:

• Don't use microwave popcorn - pop fresh kernels on the stovetop or buy a Whirly Pop (which we have and use almost nightly)
• Don't salt the popcorn before adding Peppered Bacon Salt or use a pre-salted variety
• Try adding a bit of garlic powder (that's our favorite combo)

Some other ways we've used Peppered include hamburgers (garlic powder is also a good combo here, and chopped onions mixed with the spices in the burger itself are great), Bloody Marys (always a hit), tequila shots (none for me, thanks) and on chicken. Bacon Salt from around the web

Great writeup today on Bacon Salt in The Dalles Chronicle in Dalles, Oregon. The writer - Rodger Nichols - is a member of our new favorite message board, The Straight Dope, and saw some of the bacon buzz happening there. So it's only fitting that he get the full scoop on Bacon Salt in the newspaper community (although, to be fair, there was a small writeup in the Riverside, CA Press-Enterprise).

There have been some really funny quotes about Bacon Salt around the web that we're really having a good time with. Our recent favorites are:

• I wear the heels in this relationship called Bacon Salt "love in salt form." With her permission, that will go in our marketing materials!
• TSoPB created the word "bacontrulescent" and said of Bacon Salt "This is what the people who left the repressive intolerance of England for liberty and justice in America for: the freedom to enjoy pork–flavoring on their vegetables."
• Chad Wright is acting as a human guinea pig for his friends, and so far seems impressed by Bacon Salt
• Dave at Davespicks.com is "drooling and making Homer noises at the thought of eating Bacon Salt."
• The Bacon & Money blog says "Never before have I been so excited to receive a package in the mail.  It will be like a tiny Bacon Chirstmas, I think."

About 600 of you or so should be having Bacon Christmases in the near future - in the last 3 days, we've gotten just about caught up on orders and sent out about that many packages in the mail. We worked until 2am the past few nights making it happen (and promise to never again get that far behind on orders!). The neighborhood USPS carrier - a very nice, 4'8" 85 lb woman with a bad back - officially hates us, but it's in the mail!
